A Taste for Fall

As the weather gets a little cooler with each passing week, I am reminded of many traditions growing up.

It was the time of year my father would get into baking bread. The smell of fresh baked bread is better than cookies coming out of the oven on a fall evening. Baking bread was not my specialty for years. So I decided not to give up on the desire to master learning bread making. It gets easier if 1. you follow directions and don't rush the process 2. use the correct amounts in the ingredients 3. enjoy. When you bake or cook you are using all those senses especially with bread , it is a hands on experience.

When I was in San Francisco some years ago, sour dough bread was a staple with meals. I craved sour dough with coffee, forget the breakfast meal, that was perfection in my book. Ever since I have not been able to master making sour dough starter, so I ordered it. Not everything about baking has to be work. It is so worth that step. My doctors one day may not agree with this decision but I will deal with that issue when it comes. For now, sourdough bread is my initiation into fall!
